A trip to Newcastle Island is nearly guaranteed to result in raccoon sightings. The raccoon population has flourished on the island with few to no predators and abundant sources of food (both natural and from unwitting campers). Each year growing up I would visit Newcastle with my family, and each year I would spend hours watching raccoons, impressed by their intelligence and dexterity. During the summer of 2020, I found myself back on the island for the first time in years and, again, I spent my time with these curious bandits. I guess old habits die hard.
