"Sir Jade" I have an Anna's hummingbird (which is rare in my area), visiting my yard daily since October. He (I think it is a juvenile male) has created quite a stir in the birding community, as he is not only rare for this area, but has been here over 2 months now during the cold winter. He comes to my house at sunrise, and feeds from the hummingbird feeders, and then spends his day exploring the neighbourhood, hunting for bugs in evergreen trees, and he feeds regularly from the feeders throughout the day, until sunset, when he leaves to go somewhere to go to bed (torpor) for the night. On the really cold windy days, he mostly perches in my shrub for shelter between feedings. I did not have a feeder out until he appeared. Once he appeared, I then put out a feeder to help him have enough energy to migrate. But he seems to like it here, and now I have a few feeders out and I have been trying to keep them from freezing ever since! So far we have had -20 degree Celsius weather a few times, and he has bravely made it through and he is doing very well. I have never had any type of hummingbird in my yard ever before, so this is quite an amazing experience. I really feel like I know him and he seems to know me as well. "Sir Jade" has been such a blessing during this time of Covid and staying at home. He has been a real miracle and joyful bright spot in my winter. I will miss him when he leaves.
