One of my favourite birding locations is at Mud Creek Marsh near Pembroke Ontario. On this particular day it started raining and the other birders packed up and left. This immature least bittern slowly climbed up awkwardly out of the marsh right beside me. When he realized he was being watched, he suddenly puffed up and froze. He then squawked and flew off into the cattails. I was lucky to catch him just as he detected me and displayed his shock!
