It all happened in a flash! The birds at my backyard bird feeder scattered as this immature Sharp-shinned Hawk flew in at high speed and caught a European Starling that was slower than the others. While some people may feel sorry for the starling, predators are an important part of a wildlife garden's or urban backyard's ecosystem. While the starling lost in this interaction, the young hawk gained a meal and experience...and went on to live another day. Photo taken January 28, 2021.
