This humpback whale calf is not just any calf. This is the first known grandchild of the famous "Big Mama". After an 89-year local extinction of humpback whales in the Salish Sea, Big Mama was the first humpback whale to return in 1997. She has been seen here every single year since, and is responsible for rekindling the humpback population in this region. Her daughter "Tulip" had her first baby this year. This little calf seemed as psyched to see us as we were to see it! It is exciting to see these generations of humpbacks return to the Salish Sea, and such a privilege to witness.
