Flight Interrupted

I was tracking the Harrier on the right when out of nowhere the young female Northern Harrier barrel-rolled into the shot. It happened so quickly that all I saw was a blur of colour.

Bear Hug

I'd been watching this brown bear for about 15mins, working its way through the low foliage when it went up on its hind legs next to the cedar. At first, it used its teeth to pull strips of bark from the tree; it then swung around, remaining up-right, and began scratching its back, then around again, but this time literally hugging the tree. It remained like this for about 20 seconds, then dropped to all fours and disappeared into the underbrush.

A Bare Embrace

I watched a bear approach a tree, stand on its hind legs, then strip the bark with its teeth, twisting its head from left to right. Then, still on its hind legs, the bear turned, stretched to its full height, and began massaging its back, now rocking its shoulders from side to side, eyes closed, looking to the sky. Turning again, the bear lowered its shoulders, lowered its head, and embraced the tree (photo), before purposefully dragging its extended clawed paws back to its body, leaving a distinct scar of freshly exposed red cedar.

Birds to pray.

I was tracking the hawk on the right when the second bird barrel rolled into the view finder, a blur of colour, three frames, and the photographers’ prayer.
