Tree Lookout

In the spring season Black Bears love feasting on poplar tree seeds. This cub was both independent and brave, climbing to the highest limbs of the tree to find more of these delicious seeds while it’s mama and sibling stayed close together on a limb further down. I was especially taken by the spring cub’s heart shaped patch of fur on its chest.

Bighorn Mountain Splendor

This Bighorn ram and ewe were living high in the alpine, in challenging terrain that is perfect for this agile, sure footed species which make walking along steep mountainsides look effortless. This dramatic setting really showcased the scale of the scene with its mountainous backdrop. The wind is cold and the air was thinner at this high altitude. You can see the wind swirling atop the mountain, lifting snow off of its peak.

Crouching Into Autumn

Lynx are very hard to find and often when you see one it is only for a fleeting moment. I had only caught a quick glimpse of this Lynx as it hurried through the woods and thought I wouldn’t see it again. They are often watching us but remaining just out of sight because they are shy animals. I was surprised to come across it again, camouflaged in the late fall colors crouching down looking curiously at me.

Winter Came Early

Finding this bull Elk during an early fall snowstorm showed the change and contrast of seasons so beautifully. The large snowflakes were falling heavily as the Elk foraged for food in the snow-covered ground. It posed regally with the leaves of the Aspen trees ablaze with golden yellow filling the background.

A Rare Look

I felt the biggest rush of excitement when I first laid eyes on a White Grizzly Bear for the first time. Seeing a White Grizzly is an extremely rare occurrence, and one I never thought I would have. Much rarer than a Spirit Bear, which is actually a type of Black Bear, the recessive genes which cause a bear to be white is not common in Grizzly Bears. Bears are my favorite animal and it’s hard for me to put into words what this unforgettable moment meant to me.
