Watching You

I floated past this Black Oystercatcher in my kayak on a quiet misty morning. Much to my surprise, it didn't run or fly away, but just turned its back and watched me as I slowly drifted by.

This Hooded Merganser was making its way up a side channel, diving occasionally. I followed it up the channel and waited for a still moment between dives when it would make its way further along.

Something to Say

This Clark's Nutcracker had a lot to say to me while I ate my lunch overlooking Lake Louise. Whether he mocked me for being a fool for climbing hills in the heat or wanted me to share my snacks, I'll never know. I did appreciate the company nonetheless.

A Pop of Colour on a Dark Day

Early last spring as heavy times settled down upon us, I made a mission to walk and find birds everyday. Many days I would sit by the pools at the river and watch the ducks and geese go about their lives. On this day, particularly cloudy and drab, I shifted out my routine and went somewhere else. Along the way, I heard this Ana's Hummingbird and followed the sound until we met. Sitting in a bare tree for a rest, we watched each other and made a deal that I wouldn't get closer if it didn't fly away. After 20 minutes or so, I said thanks and goodbye and it flew away into the park. The day seemed lighter after that.
