Huddle Up

Found these western sandpipers resting en route to the south for their annual winter migration. It appears they are protecting their beaks from the cold and staying close to each other for heat. I learned afterwards that Blackie Spit is part of the Pacific Flyway - I feel so fortunate to live nearby and witness this behaviour. I was very cold that morning, I did not have my winter jacket on but it was all worth it. Taken from a safe distance using a telephoto lens.

Ice Candy

During our camping trip there was snow for a couple of days before the weather warmed-up again. We saw what looks like a western anemone covered with ice in the meadows of Mt Assiniboine Provinical park where thousands of these "ice candies" thrive.

An American Wigeon

The American wigeon is seen here flexing its wings at blackie spit in Surrey, BC

Little Visitor

There is this hummingbird (I believe is a Rufous) that would frequent our backyard. On this day I noticed he/she was feeding on some garden flowers, I set up a hide at a safe distance and waited 2 hours to finally get a sharp photo of this wonderful creature.

Coming Through

A group of western sandpipers rest on the beach as the sun was rising on this very cold morning. I learned from a couple I met that day that they come from Alaska and fly as far as Central/South America during the winter. Taken at a safe distance with a telephoto zoom lens.
