Algonquin Heron

Crouched down low on the edge of a pond, peering over a Beaver dam I watched a Heron walk slowly across small grassy islands in bright, early morning mist.

Common Loon in the early morning mist

I'd paddled my kayak out onto Baptiste Lake in Southern Ontario, dawn had only just broken and trees were casting long shadows around the edge of the lake. I could hear a Common Loon calling in the distance and as I got closer I saw a lone bird gliding slowly through the mist. The dark shadows and rising mist catching the morning sun created a beautifully calm but highly contrasting scene.

Misty Meadow Deer

Whitetail Deer are fairly common throughout Southern Ontario but they are remarkably adept at going unseen. Walking along the edge of a meadow near Whitby, I had seen a few faint shadows of deer in the misty distance when all of a sudden this doe raised its head for a few seconds to check me out.

Face to face in the forest

It was just before dawn and I was only about 5 minutes into my first hike when I heard a something crunching through the forest. I stopped and waited for a few minutes watching this Bull Moose get slowly closer until he stopped, making brief eye contact before turning away and vanishing back into the trees.

Curious Moose Calf

Hiking a trail in Algonquin Park, Ontario I watched a moose and its calf come out of the tree line to the edge of a small pond. While the moose cooled off in the water the calf went exploring, coming within a few metres of where I was crouching on the side of the trail.
