Rare Harris

This first winter male Harris's Sparrow was found out of range in the Kelowna area of British Columbia. breeding in the Northwest Territories and wintering in Texas, this species is a rare visitor to B.C. any time of the year.

Sleeping nuggets

These Common Poorwill chicks are just a few weeks old. Often heard but not seen, poorwills are elusive nightjars whose song echoes in the canyon at Rose Valley Park in the southern interior of British Columbia.

Winter ambush

I observed this 6-year old adult female cougar in the Okanagan region of British Columbia while conducting field research on cougars for my graduate studies. Using GPS technology and trail cameras, I've learned that she has two healthy 6-month old kittens and her favourite food is Mule Deer. She traverses steep mountains, canyons, and deep snow to provide for her young.

Hidden in the pines

This was my first Great Grey Owl sightings for the central Okanagan area, just in time for Christmas. In very Canadian fashion, this owl was flushed by some young tobogganers on a snowy day. My partner and I saw a flash of movement and heard children yelling "Oh my gosh, an owl!" and there it was, perched in a mature Ponderosa pine.

Sleeping screech

This Western Screech owl is roosting during the day in a local park. The species is listed as "threatened" under the federal Species At Risk Act and the coastal population in British Columbia is in steep decline.
