The Adorable Assassin

A wild American Marten on the hunt, looking curiously at the camera. They are somewhat arboreal (tree dwelling), and thus they can be difficult to spot during the spring and summer months. However, with the bare trees in winter season, they have very little camouflage. Although they spend most of the time on the trees, they do most of their hunting on the ground. American Martens are omnivores. Typically, they hunt on small species of mammals, preferring red squirrels above all. However, in reality they feed upon any kind of prey: frogs, fish, carrion, insects and birds. From plant food they eat seeds, nuts, berries and fruits. At the turn of the twentieth century, humans hunted and persecuted the American Marten population almost to extinction due to high demand of their pelt. You would need to kill 50 martens to make one fur coat. Shameful..

Humble Bee

Bumblebees are one of my favourites. Not only are they fuzzy and cute, they also play an important role in the ecosystem. It takes more than soil, water, and sunshine to make the world green. At least 30% of the world’s crops and 90% of all plants require cross-pollination to spread and thrive, and here in Canada, bees are our most important pollinators. As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. They support the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants, which serve as food and shelter for large and small creatures. Bees contribute to complex, interconnected ecosystems that allow a diverse number of different species to co-exist. There is no doubting the importance of bees to our food supply. Without them, our gardens would be bare and our plates empty.

Blue Majesty

What's better than autumn foliage? A blue jay posing for the autumn colours. They are skittish birds, so photographing them can be a bit of a challenge. If they hear you approaching or any sort of movement noise, they will fly away. For this shot, I like how the ember encore of autumn in the backdrop compliments this beautiful blue jay.

Mystique Tunnel

We got lost on our way to Whistler, BC, and went into a native territory. After driving around for a bit, we came across this pristine greeneries. I have never seen such beautiful array of lush green trees, which were also covered with mosses.
