Mushroom shelter

I took this photo while photographing fungi for a citizen science project to catalog the biodiversity of the Cumberland Community Forest. I actually had no idea that this mushroom had a tenant until I saw the image on my computer screen!

Mushroom buddies

I took this photo while photographing fungi for a citizen science project to catalog the biodiversity of the Cumberland Community Forest. I was amused to find this pair of mushrooms growing next to one another like a big brother and little brother.

PNW winter mushroom

This mushroom was nestled in the shelter of a stump. Not having paid much attention to them before, I was surprised to see mushrooms growing in the middle of winter. Mind you, this is the Pacific Northwest so not particularly cold, but still! I found the texture of the mushroom, moss, and host stump - brought out by the speedlight lighting the scene - to be fascinating. This image was inspired by a "fungus bioblitz" held in the Cumberland Community Forest to highlight and catalog its biodiversity.

Mushroom 1

I had been photographing fungi as part of a citizen science project in Cumberland, BC, and enjoyed it so much that I continued looking for and shooting them even after the bioblitz was over. I was lucky enough to get the setting sun between two fence slats shining on this little guy.
