My Favourite Animals

During my second nursing contract in Yukon this summer, I spent as much time as I could just driving around and taking in as much of the Territory as I could. I was born and raised in South-Western Ontario, so the terrain of Yukon was absolutely surreal to me. I was in love with every inch of it. While driving aimlessly down the Alaska Highway, I spotted my first Grizzly. He happened to be in the most picturesque area I've ever seen. Camera in hand, I nervously stepped out of my car and caught this picture over the hood. The bear was sniffing at me, as curious about me as I was of him. We watched each other for a few minutes, until the lure of food was more interesting to my new-found friend. Never the less, I look at this picture often and remember the magic of the Canadian Territories.

Everyone Across

While driving up the Alaska Highway, I spotted a Momma-Bear and her two little ones. After playing briefly on the road, they were ushered across safely.

Momma Bear

I was travel nursing in Yukon this summer, and was camping near Haines Junction during my sets off. I had actually pulled over to get a picture of a deer, but was too slow with the camera. After sitting there trying to adjust my settings, I saw a head pop out of the bushes in front of me. After that, 2 more little heads popped out, and I realized what I was seeing. Momma started huffing at me when I stepped out beside my car, but we all kept our distance from each other. The little ones played briefly on the road before being ushered across by a protective mother. It was just the 4 of us for kilometres around, and I am grateful to have caught this moment.
