This White-tailed Deer doe had likely been hit by a vehicle on the highway just behind this scene. Regrettably, only in death did it find its way into the Wildlife Crossing designed to reduce wildlife moralities along this corridor.
Downy Woodpeckers are always a delight to watch. This female was creeping up the back of a tree but would pop around the side to keep an eye on me while I was stopped on the trail.
While enjoying the trails at Riverwood, we stopped to offer the birds some black-oil sunflower seeds. A Red-breasted Nuthatch eagerly waited on the branch nearby while the Black-capped Chickadees to their turns first. It must have been the smallest in the pecking order!
I was surveying a new road extension for wildlife mortalities when I came across this large American Toad in the grass, obviously heading towards the road to cross towards the forest and wetland on the other side. I gave it a careful helping hand across in the direction it was moving to avoid meeting an untimely end beneath a vehicle's tire!
I was laying out small mammal traps as part of a wildlife crossing study I'm working on when I spotted this little American Toad in a sandy spot near a stream. It was a hot July afternoon and the sand must have provided just the right amount of coolness in the shade of the tall grasses.
