It was a rainy day with wind and sunny breaks so I could catch the swans in a variety of ways. I was hiding behind a lot of brush and trees trying to shoot through small spaces. It was raining and the sun was breaking through, which created interesting lighting. But I never dreamed of capturing rain drops on the branches that would act like miniature magnifying glasses.
To me, this photo is a metaphor for this whole year. The birds coming out of the darkness of the pandemic and swimming toward the light of hope that we will see an end to this in early 2021. But there still appears to be darkness ahead. I caught these swans on a small river in the rain. They were going upstream in the low light when the sun briefly broke through and gave me this photo. I thought of the metaphor right away. I managed to get a few images before the clouds hid the sun again.
After watching this grebe for a while, it dove and came up with the gunnel that became its lunch! The grebe had to rearrange the gunnel until it slipped down its throat and that was that.
I love to go into the area where there is still old growth forest. It is near a salmon river so makes a very nice area to hike in.
This giant spruce tree is close to a salmon river on Haida Gwaii.
