At nightfall, the forest will be stormed by a common but rarely observed sciurid. The Southern flying squirrel is mainly nocturnal unlike its close cousins the squirrels and chipmunks. This rodent has the amazing ability to soar impressive distances.
The very territorial Common Goldeneye are particularly expressive and vocal during this period. Displays of males include abruptly whipping the water backwards while throwing their head in the same direction and end with a call.
Ancestor of most strains of domesticated and self-domesticated duck, the wild Mallard generally arouses little interest but remains a smart and elegant duck.
The Common Goldeneye is one of the 6 species of arboreal duck found in Québec. Their nesting requires the presence of snags or sufficiently large and mature trees where these ducks find the cavities they need for laying. A characterization study of the breeding habitat of arboreal ducks, dated from 2002, demonstrated that on average 300m separated the nesting site from the nearest body of water.(1) This suggests that the standards forestry practices, which only require a 20m riparian strip near water bodies and allow the destruction of trees of no commercial value encourage the decline of arboreal duck populations by reducing the availability of potential nest sites.
The eastern population of Greater Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis tabida) continues to expand its wintering and breeding range to the north and east of North America. Here is one captured on its historic territories, the great peat bogs of the far west of Quebec.
