"Horned Lark In Winter" by Debbie Oppermann. I have been searching for the Horned Lark all winter and finally found a plowed corn field on the outskirts of Guelph Ontario where there were quite a few of these songbirds. Trying to get a close capture of these small birds requires a little patience as just driving down the road from a distance seems to startle them and they fly further into the field. So you sit and wait until they return. They are small birds with a long body and small bill, brown above, pale below with a black chest band. The males have a black mask, yellow on the head and throat and tiny black hornlike feathers on the head which are not always visible. They are pretty darn cute.
