Turkey Walk

"Turkey Walk" by Debbie Oppermann. Driving on rural roads near Fergus Ontario Canada, I was pleased to see a few wild Turkeys feeding in a roadside field at the edge of a forest. Of course as soon as I stopped they headed towards the stand of trees and were showing their backside to me. Wild turkeys were extirpated (locally extinct) from Ontario as a result of habitat loss and over-hunting. Reintroduction efforts began in 1984. Turkeys are now a common sight in southern Ontario and they are continuing to expand their range. Did you know that turkeys have over 6,000 feathers and that they can run up to 19km per hour? They are classed as ground birds but they do fly up into trees to roost for the night.

Winter Walk

"Winter Walk" by Debbie Oppermann. On this lovely snowy winter day in Guelph Ontario Canada, near the Speed River, these two lovely Mallard ducks were out for their winter walk in the snow. They looked so comfortable waddling along looking for food.

Wood Duck Pair

"Wood Duck Pair" by Debbie Oppermann. I was absolutely thrilled when these two flamboyant Wood Ducks finally come out for a swim in the spring marsh in Guelph Ontario Canada. They had been hiding on the far side of the wetland where I could not go. I have been wanting to see these stunningly pretty perching Ducks for some time. The male is in courtship colors and they have paired and are now looking for a nest site, which means they will be around for some time.
