"Ruffed Grouse Stare" by Debbie Oppermann. While walking the Chikanishing Trail at Killarney Provincial Park Ontario Canada, we spotted the Ruffed Grouse at the edge of the path and heading towards the tall grass. As quietly as possible, we ventured closer and then this Thunder Chicken or Drummer decided to just stare and then put on a beautiful display of the tail feathers and neck ruff. It has lovely barred and spotted tawny brown plumage which blends into the landscape so it is camouflaged. It is mostly a ground dweller in hardwood forests and is hard to spot, so was quite pleased that I could not only see the elusive Grouse but also watch the wonderful show with the tail feathers and neck.
