"Old Maid's Bonnets" by Debbie Oppermann. Not far from the village of Killarney Ontario Canada is a patch of wild Lupines in varying shades of purple, blue, violet and pink along the side of the road. They are stunningly beautiful towering wildflowers with bright green palmate leaves that turn toward the sun, hence the name Sundial Lupine. They are a perennial legume that are the single known food source for the caterpillars of the Karner Blue Butterfly which have since been considered a species at risk. They certainly take center stage for early summer wildflowers.
