This species of the blue grouse, dusky grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) was busy into breeding season. I spotted this fellow on a trail picking gravel. He was just a blue gray typical grouse colour. I stalked to about 15 feet from him and was completely ignored. I motioned for my husband to try calling with the 'hooting' sequence that blue grouse use this time of year. The grouse instantly puffed up, spread his tail and started displaying his coloured throat patches. What a wonderful thing to watch!
