I watched a bear approach a tree, stand on its hind legs, then strip the bark with its teeth, twisting its head from left to right. Then, still on its hind legs, the bear turned, stretched to its full height, and began massaging its back, now rocking its shoulders from side to side, eyes closed, looking to the sky. Turning again, the bear lowered its shoulders, lowered its head, and embraced the tree (photo), before purposefully dragging its extended clawed paws back to its body, leaving a distinct scar of freshly exposed red cedar.
