This mushroom was nestled in the shelter of a stump. Not having paid much attention to them before, I was surprised to see mushrooms growing in the middle of winter. Mind you, this is the Pacific Northwest so not particularly cold, but still! I found the texture of the mushroom, moss, and host stump - brought out by the speedlight lighting the scene - to be fascinating. This image was inspired by a "fungus bioblitz" held in the Cumberland Community Forest to highlight and catalog its biodiversity.
