A urban walking trail surrounds Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation in Victoria, BC. It provides an attractive home for some of our local birds. Volunteers help to remove evasive plants from this space. On a lovely October, 2020 walk on the trail, there were many mallards hiding in the rushes.
The lovely magnolia tree outside my window is a wonderful hiding place for many small birds from the larger birds of prey who often scoop black eyed junkos, and other small birds on a pass through. However, it also is about 10 feet from the feeder outside my window, so is often guarded by one or more of these Anna’s hummingbirds.
One our local great blue heron’s wasn’t pleased about either the high tide or the wind on a recent January 2021 day. He spent his afternoon seeking shelter in the tree.
On a December 28, 2020 social distanced walk through Sidney, British Columbia, we came across this very busy Red-Breasted Sapsucker hard at work. It was difficult to get a non-blurry photo with my small Sony pocket camera because he was so intently working, but he was keeping an eye on me. This isn’t his first day ‘at work’ on this job site as you can see!
In the beautiful Tsehum Harbour, Sidney, BC there are 2 herons who stake their territory and run off any newcomers who try to ‘share’ their feeding ground. Each of the 2 herons has a very specific ‘area’. After a day of heavy rain, the sun finally broke through around 3 pm. One heron was sitting in his usual spot on a dock covered with old tires to protect him from the wind, while this beautiful heron was in the trees waiting for a lower tide which could help procure supper.
