Although being a novice to the wildflower scene in Newfoundland, these twinflowers are amazing.
Newfoundland's Pitcher Plant was so impressive they decided to give it the distinction of the provincial flower.
I do not know if this contributed to an apparent crash in the snow shoe hare population, but the excessive ticks and presence of Lyme Disease is indeed a cause for concern.
The CornellLab of Ornithology lists the Rusty Blackbird as one of North America's most rapidly declining species. I think they are awesome though I admit I have not seen many until I recently encountered a small flock not far from Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador. I hope they return next year as they are a delight to watch and sightings are extra special for me considering their declining numbers.
A small flock of Red Crossbills were making the rounds of the various feeding locations at the Thomas Howe Demonstration Forest just outside Gander Newfoundland. Typically these birds feast on coniferous cones but for some reason the cones are scarce this year as are the dogberries. Hopefully they will get enough nourishment from the sunflower seeds the various hikers and photographers leave on the snow for them.
