Looking back

We had some rare visitors in Ottawa this fall, 5 Long-tailed duck. Such a treat when you realize they are not that skittish and at times, would come up right in front of you after a dive.

Preening session

An American Widgeon is preening in the fall water reflection. A duck we only see in the migration time in the Ottawa area but always a treat to capture.

The beauty of the immature

This is an immature Chestnut-sided Warbler during fall migration. Not a bird I see very often even during the spring migration. According to Audubon, their numbers may have declined somewhat in recent decades.

Focused on food!

This was quite a morning. The light, the river and then this Red-breasted Merganser swimming by the shore was just a wonderful moment I was not expecting. This subject is not usually in our area that time of the year so that was a pleasant surprise. I absolutely love capturing ducks in big waves and even though these waves were not that big but they had that very interesting colour and movement to frame the subject. In this case, because of the wave movement and my camera angle, we are able to see the beak in the water a split second before it dove in.

Merry-go-round

While focusing on a male Wood Duck nearby, I noticed these big ripples coming my way. I looked up and saw this Mallard preening and the way she was positioned with the ripples was just like a ball of feathers making this perfect water movement. I took several closer shots to freeze the moment and at the same time wishing all the other ducks would swim away so I would have more negative zone to show the ripples but they never listen to the photographer....lol
